'The Untold Labyrinth'
September 2017 - March 2018
â–ª 6 Months
'The Untold Labyrinth' was a student based project, made as part of my final academic year.
This short game experience was designed and developed by myself and three other team members.
Our roles within the project;
Ben Russell - Technical Artist
Chantelle Hillman - Rigger and Animator
Connor Jenkins - Concept and Texture Artist
Nathan Small - 3D Modelling Artist

About the project
This was the first project I had worked on as a technical artist. In previous projects I worked as a 3D modelling artist as well as a concept and texture artist. So what made me decide to change it up in my final year? Basically I didn't have much of a choice. My team had a 3D modelling artist, and I was the only member with some knowledge in Unreal Engine 4.
As this project was my first time properly working within UE4, to say it had its problems would be an understatement. There were many times where things didn't go quite right. However, these occasions is when I worked harder to learn why things were going wrong. This led to many hours researching to find solutions to the problems I was facing. After 6 months of working on it I was proud to say I had developed a fully functional game experience that was also packaged and playable on the Playstation4 platform.
My role within the project as the technical artist consisted of;
â–ª Game-play design
â–ª Level design / construction
▪ Game-play mechanic implementation
â–ª User interface (UI)
â–ª Controls
â–ª Animations system
â–ª Materials / Shaders
â–ª Particle systems
â–ª Importing game assets

The project itself is a first person puzzler with some elements of platforming and exploration. The uniqueness to the game in comparison, is that the player can travel between two realities. This mechanic is developed and implemented in a way for the player to solve puzzles and progress throughout.
It may not be my best work but it was and will always be the starting point to my career.
